Because I am a person with an anxious disposition, I find this poem by Rainer Maria Rilke very comforting and tender:
I am, you anxious one Don’t you sense me, ready to break into being at your touch? My murmurings surround you like shadowy wings. Can’t you see me standing before you cloaked in stillness? Hasn’t my longing ripened in you from the beginning as fruit ripens on a branch? I am the dream you are dreaming. When you want to awaken, I am the wanting: I grow strong in the beauty you behold. And with the silence of the stars I enfold your cities made by time.
I have been working with the first line of the poem, and I have found it very helpful. It has helped me to realise that God can even use my anxiety as a tool for my spiritual awakening – every time I feel anxious it is a reminder to return to the I Am Presence of God in the here and now.
