Silent Sunday
Return to Simple Silence

The theme for this silent Sunday is the call to return to simple silence.
Opening music:
Introduction Talk:
Quiet Prayer
You can choose between a 10 and a 20 minute time of quiet prayer using the links below. If you find that your mind is caught up in thinking, gently let go of your thoughts and return to the quietness that is always present outside of your thinking, through awareness of your breath or your sacred word.
Listen to the following music as an ending to the time of prayer:
Lyrics:
Come to the quiet, longing for more
Silence the chaos, put your feet on the shore.
Sacred Reading:
Read the following readings through twice or three times, with an attitude of open receptivity. Allow a few minutes of silence between the readings. Listen for any words that call out to you, or that draw you into the sacredness of silence that is deeper than your usual knowing:
Psalm 131
Most Gracious Presence,
let me not be arrogant,
nor boast of my virtuous deeds;
Let me not seek fame or set my heart
on the riches of the world.
Help me to calm and quiet my soul,
like a child quieted at its mother's breast;
like a child that is quieted, be so my soul.
I shall hope in You, O Breath of my breath,
from this time forth and forevermore.
(from Psalms for Praying, by Nan Merrill)
Let the Silence take you in
When the mind becomes unbearable, Silence is the cure.
There is nothing more precious than Silence.
No final conclusion, no ultimate insight, no peak experience;
nothing is more precious than Silence.
This Silence I speak of does not mean the absence of sound;
there may be sound, be it music or noise, but the Silence remains.
When the mind turns towards the heart, you will feel the call of Silence;
It is like the ocean calling its offspring to return home.
It will start to punctuate your day, like a cool breeze flowing through your mind.
Sit with this Silence, then sit a bit longer.
Let the Silence take you in.
Thus ends the oppression of the mind, and begins the reign of Silence.
Watch for its presence in your heart –
you'll feel the breeze of paradise pass through your mind.
Nothing is more precious than Silence.
This Silence is love, for in the absence of any disturbance, when peace prevails, there is only love.
Silence is the cure.
(by Nabeel)
For Further Reflection:
Below are the quotes from the talk and some additional quotes for you to take this theme further.
Thomas Merton:
"No mind can comprehend God’s reality, as it is in itself, and if we approach God, we must advance not only by knowing but by not-knowing. We must seek to communicate with God, not only by words, but above all by silence, in which there is only the One Word, and the One Word is infinite Love and endless silence. . . . Where is silence? Where is solitude? Where is Love? Ultimately, these cannot be found anywhere except in the ground of our own being. There is perfect peace, because we are grounded in infinite creative and redemptive Love." (Love and Living, p. 18)
The silence in the mind, by R S Thomas
But the silence in the mind
is when we live best,
within listening distance
of the silence we call God.
This is the deep calling to deep of the psalm-writer,
the bottomless ocean
we launch the armada of
our thoughts on, never arriving.
It is a presence, then,
whose margins are our margins;
that calls us out over our own fathoms.
What to do but draw a little nearer to such ubiquity
by remaining still?
Ending Prayer:
In the busyness of this day grant me a stillness of seeing, O God.
In the conflicting voices of my heart grant me a calmness of hearing.
Let my seeing and hearing, my words and actions,
be rooted in a silent certainty of your presence.
Let my passions for life and the longings for justice that stir within me
be grounded in the experience of your stillness.
Let my life be rooted in the ground of your peace, O God,
let me be rooted in the depths of your peace.
Amen.
(By John Philip Newell)
Ending music:
Song lyrics:
My soul is at rest in God alone,
My salvation comes from God.
